A truck driver was pinned in his vehicle after a canoe smashed through his window and impaled him south of Levin today.
The canoe came loose from a vehicle travelling along State Highway 1 and hit the truck. "It came through the windscreen and pinned him there," a police central communications spokesman said.
The accident happened at the intersection of SH1 and Kimberley Rd about 12.30pm and the truck ended up across the nearby railway tracks, he said.
A Fire Service spokesman said one person was trapped in the cab by the canoe. He was cut out and flown to Palmerston North Hospital. His injuries were unknown.
"It was a freak accident. It's not one you will find replicated again in a great hurry."
