The family of a gravely ill schoolboy is at his bedside as he fights for his life after being hit by a car in Hamilton yesterday.
Shaun Malthus, 13, is in a coma in the intensive care ward at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton today where his condition is described as unstable and critical.
Police said it appeared the Hamilton Boys' High School student stepped into the path of a car on Ruakura Rd about 8.30am as he followed a friend who had already run across the road.
The 17-year-old car driver locked his brakes as he tried to avoid hitting the boy.
Police said it was unlikely the driver would face charges.
