'Callous' father murdered daughter, court told

A father showed "nothing short of callousness to a shocking degree" when he allegedly killed his 11-week-old baby daughter, a court was told today.

Tahani Mahomed was admitted to hospital with severe head injuries on December 28, 2007 and died four days later.

Her father, Azees Mahomed, 31, has pleaded not guilty to her murder and two counts of causing her grievous bodily harm.

He and his wife Tabbasum Mahomed, 26, also deny failing to provide their daughter with the necessaries of life.

Closing the case for the Crown, prosecutor Phil Hamlin told the jury that in 11 days they had heard about the 11 weeks of the life of Tahani.

He said the jury two things were certain -- that Tahani Mohamed died from non-accidental injuries, and that one or both of the accused were lying to police about what happened.

Defence lawyers Chris Wilkinson-Smith for Azees Mohamed and Paul Borich for Tabbasum Mohamed are expected to close their cases this afternoon.
