Blenheim man rescued for sore back

A 19-year-old Blenheim man with a sore back was rescued from Tongariro National Park last night.

The man had been tramping with his parents and a friend when he had difficulty breathing and thought he may have punctured a lung.

Turangi search and rescue volunteers were dispatched after the man's mother and friend alerted police from Whakapapa Village.

Rescuers helped the man and his father to walk to the Desert Rd, where they were picked up by four-wheel drive vehicles.

It turned out the man was cold, tired and suffering from minor back pain.
