Blanket suppression in liquor store killing lifted

A District Court judge has lifted a blanket suppression order relating to seven people facing charges following the death of south Auckland liquor store owner Navtej Singh in June last year.

Judge A'e'au Semi Epati issued the order in Manukau District Court on Monday at the beginning of a depositions hearing to decide whether the seven men should stand trial over the charges.

But after agreement between lawyers and applications on behalf of media, the blanket suppression order was lifted, meaning the accused can be named along with the charges they face.

Some suppression orders relating to evidence were imposed, however, while images of some of the men were ordered to be pixellated.

Myron Robert Felise, 21, Tino Faamele Felise, 17, Anitelea Chan Kee, 20, and Jason Naseri, 20, face charges of murder, aggravated robbery and armed robbery.

Eti Filoa, 23, and Walter McCarthy, 18, face armed robbery charges, and Mefiposeta Chan Kee, 24, is charged with being an accessory after the killing.

Mr Singh, 30, was shot in June last year while working in his Riverton liquor store in Manurewa East as he was handing over money to robbers. He died the next day.

Anitelea Chan Kee and Mefiposeta Chan Kee have been committed to trial during the first three days of the depositions hearing.

The hearing for the rest is expected to run for two weeks.
