Banned epileptic driver casued $30,000 damage

An epilepsy sufferer caused $30,000 when he had a fit while illegally driving his three children in his 4WD along Napier's Marine Parade, a court was told.

Richard Puna, 28, of Hastings was sentenced to 250 hours community service for driving while suspended in August last year.

Puna was driving his three children in his Isuzu Bighorn last August when he rammed a car on Marine Parade, Hawke's Bay Today newspaper reported.

That car struck a parked stationwagon, which mounted a footpath and hit the front of a house.

Puna's vehicle then left the road and demolished a letterbox, before smashing into a garage at a two-storey home.

Most of the damage has been covered by insurance and other means, but Puna was ordered to pay reparation of $1500 for damage to one of the vehicles.
