Assessment for man accused of killing wife

A man charged with murdering his wife earlier this month will be assessed for his ability to plead to the charge.

Donald Gisborne, 68, appeared in Whakatane District Court yesterday before Judge Louis Bidois.

His lawyer, Roger Gowing, sought the psychiatric reports under the Mentally Impaired Persons Act, which would also look into the possibility that Gisborne was insane at the time of the offending.

He has entered no plea at this stage to murdering his wife Kanok-On, who was found dead in their home on December 3.

Gisborne was remanded in custody to reappear on January 15.
