April hearing on taxi driver murder charges

Four days in April have been set aside to hear Youth Court depositions against two teenagers charged with the murder of Christchurch taxi driver Abdulrahman Ikhtiari.

The April 27 date was set at a sitting of the Youth Court before Judge John Strettell in Christchurch this afternoon.

The hearing must be held in the Youth Court because one of the two accused is aged 16 and in that jurisdiction. The other accused, Randell Legion Wiremu Brown, is 19 and comes under the District Court jurisdiction.

The two are jointly charged with the murder of Mr Ikhtiari, a 39-year-old father-of-five, who was allegedly stabbed to death in his taxi on the night of December 6, in Worcester Street, central Christchurch.

Elizabeth Bulger appeared for the younger youth and told the court that the hearing would last four days. But she added the police had made a commitment about disclosing documents related to the case which may mean the estimate could be revised.

Pip Hall appeared as defence counsel for Brown, who is listed as a painter, from Woolston. He made no application for bail, and both teenagers were remanded in custody.
