Alleged fraudster caught after 20 months on run

Police have nabbed an alleged fraudster who has managed to elude them for 20 months.

Tony Edwin Meihana Hartley failed to appear at Wanganui District Court on two occasions in late 2007 after being charged on 32 counts of fraud.

He was captured at Raglan this morning, and will appear in Hamilton District Court this afternoon.

A warrant was issued for his arrest in 2007 when he skipped a parole board hearing.

Police have been pursuing him ever since, and two months ago made a public appeal for information.

Sightings were reported but Hartley remained on the move and was believed to have frequently switched identities.

Hartley was part Maori but could be mistaken for European or Mediterranean and may have been using accents to disguise his identity, police said.

Over the last few days police received word he might be in Raglan.

This morning an Armed Offenders Squad was sent to a rural property where he was arrested.
