Global Insight: More protection needed for journalists

Liberal democracies need to do more at home and abroad to protect journalists, Professor Robert Patman says.

The foreign affairs specialist was speaking to Global Insight about the death of Palestinian-American Shireen Abu Akleh and more than 20 other journalists around the globe during the past few months.

Prof Patman says politicians in democratic countries need to ensure they do not denigrate their own countries’ journalists for holding power to account and need to make it clear any mistreatment of journalists in conflict zones will not be tolerated.

“Where journalists are killed in suspicious circumstances it is incumbent on democracies to demand full and transparent independent inquiries,” Prof Patman says.
