Otago Boys' top team at SI champs

Seven Otago Boys' High School swimmers competed at the South Island secondary schools championships.

Andrew Trembath excelled in the 200m events, picking up golds in freestyle and backstroke.

The relay team of Andrew, Chris Dickie, Ben McMahon and Michael Gray finished off the opening day by winning the the 200m medley relay over rival John McGlashan.

Andrew again showed his class on day two by winning the 200m breaststroke and 200m medley. Michael claimed bronze in the 200m medley and 200m butterfly.

In the final session of the meet, Andrew notched up victories in the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly and 400m medley.

This took his medal count up to eight individual golds for the meet.

Chris secured gold in the 50m breaststroke, silver in the 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle, and bronze in the 50m freestyle.

Michael won gold in the 400m freestyle.

Samuel Wardhaugh claimed silver in the junior 100m butterfly, and George Gray pipped Ben McMahon for bronze in the junior 100m backstroke.

Nick Pryde overcame the large age gap that separated him from his competitors to earn fourth place in the open 400m medley.

Otago Boys' won the 200m freestyle relay and took the title of top overall South Island school.

Queen's High School

Year 9 pupil Caitlin McKinlay finished 12th in the final of the clubs event while representing New Zealand at the Australian rhythmic gymnastics championships in Sydney.

She is looking forward to trialling for the New Zealand team again next year.

Pupils to make representative teams over the break included year 9 Queen's sports scholarship recipient Louise Nicolson, who made the Otago under-15 hockey team, and Emily Parker-Bardrick, who made the Otago under-15 B hockey team.

Eleisha Edmunds and Jonna Barth have been named in the Otago under-14 football squad.

Judah Kelly (year 10) is going to China for the inline speed skating world cup marathon event (42.2km). Judah, one of 12 skaters from New Zealand, is competing for the internationally-sponsored X-Tech team.

Kavanagh sport

Kavanagh College teams performed well in the Catholic schools year 7-10 tournament against Verdon, St Peter's and St Kevin's.

The year 7-8 boys basketball team, the year 7 girls netball team and the year 7-8 boys rugby team won all their games.

The year 7-8 hockey team is having a great season with several strong wins in the Friday competition. Nick Parata has been one player to impress.

The Kavanagh basketball club is enjoying a busy and successful season.

Leading the way are the senior A boys and girls teams. Both are on track to make it to the finals of their respective competitions.

The senior girls are hoping to meet arch rival St Hilda's in their final.

This team also plays in the Tuesday night women's B grade and is unbeaten in that competition.

The senior boys are having a strong season, including a tight win over King's High School.

The previous week, they beat Otago Boys' B convincingly.

The senior A teams will travel to Nelson to compete in the South Island secondary schools premiership during tournament week. Junior teams will also be competing in their South Island tournament in Dunedin.

The basketball club and the college was thrilled for year 12 pupil Richard Rodger, the MVP of the New Zealand under-17 tournament.

Tokomairiro rugby

The Tokomairiro First XV had a successful eight-day rugby tour to the Gold Coast. Toko played two games plus one game of 10-a-side in eight days.

The team beat Pacific Pines 31-17, Emmanuel College 29-27 and AB Paterson, 45-5.

Cromwell exchange

There was a busy end to the term with pupils involved in the winter sports exchange with Waimate High School. Junior pupils travelled to Waimate while the senior pupils were hosted at Cromwell College. Cromwell College won the exchange 7-4.

During the holiday, year 8 pupils Luke Ashe, Flynn Reyntjes and Hamish Wilkinson were part of the Central Otago 12th grade team that participated in the Japan Cup in Ashburton.

The boys won five of six matches and had the least number of goals conceded.

These boys will also represent Central Otago in the South Island championships in Blenheim in October.

Michael Manson was unable to attend as he competed at the national karate championships and attended the national training camp in Wellington.

Josh Smith represented New Zealand in the world BMX Champs in Auckland. Josh crashed in his first race and was lucky not to hurt himself. In his three races, he placed seventh, seventh and sixth.

Bayfield High School

A highlight for Bayfield was the recent success of sisters Sam and Shannon Hope in cross-country mountain biking.

Results included fifth in under-19 (Sam) and second in under-17 (Shannon) at the national championships, and first in under-17 (Shannon) and third in under-19 (Sam) at the Oceania championships.

Sam also competed in two world cup rounds in Canada and New York, where she finished eighth and seventh respectively in a competitive under-19 girls section.

Both Sam and Shannon have been selected in the bike academy programme for promising athletes.

They are coached by former junior downhill mountain bike world champion Scarlett Hagen.

Columba sport

Hanna English has been selected in the New Zealand under-17 football team for the 2014 Junior World Cup in Costa Rica, one of only three South Island players selected.

She was part of the national schools team in 2012, and has also been selected in national teams for athletics and cross-country.

At the South Island swimming championships in Blenheim, Columba was the second-best overall girls school on points.

Caitlin Deans, a year 9 pupil, was third in the open 200m freestyle and the under-15 butterfly, second in the open 400m freestyle and 400m medley, and first in the under-15 50m freestyle.

Caitlin was the top overall under-15 female swimmer and third overall female swimmer, and set an Otago record in the 12-13 years short-course 200m freestyle.

Devon Familton was third in the under-15 100m breaststroke, and second in the 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke. Devon was the third overall under-15 female swimmer.

The open 4x50m freestyle relay team of Caitlin, Devon, Semolina Schillberg and Olivia Stevens finished second.

The South Island schools cycling championships were held at Ruapuna Raceway in Christchurch recently.

Laura Bridger, Bailey Saville and Tara Bennett gained a silver medal in the open team time trial. Bailey showed her strength to win a bronze medal in the under-17 road race.

South Otago sport

The South Otago High School girls football team is enjoying a revival in the FootballSouth competition on Thursdays.

The team has had an unbeaten run in all competition games and interschools.

Several key players will return in 2014 including captain Hayley Witt, and coaches Gareth Hore and Courtney Sneesby are working towards a team entry in the division 1 competition and tournament week.

Sam Hollows (under-19) and Sophie and Abby Erwood (under-17) made Dunedin netball teams, Susan White made the Otago under-15 hockey team, and Jordan Maaka and Tasmyn White made the Otago development team.

Mt Aspiring College

The school's skiing and snowboarding championships were held at Cardrona on July 10.

Competitors battled it out on the gravity X and giant slalom courses, achieving some outstanding results.

The top athletes will represent the school in the Otago-Southland secondary schools races.

Ski X: Female, Schaal 1, Poots 2, Alexia Becroft 3; male, Hannon 1, Max Schikker 2, Elliott Mason 3.

Ben Robertson was named skeet champion at the South Island clay target shoot in Invercargill during the holidays.

The Mt Aspiring A netball team competed in the Barbara Bell tournament in Alexandra recently in preparation for the South Island secondary schools tournament in Christchurch in September.
