After 120 ''fiercely, but fairly'' contested games of football, rugby, hockey, basketball and netball, it proved impossible to separate Oamaru's and Timaru's top teams in the inaugural Southern Catholic Colleges Tournament on Monday.
The tournament, involving St Kevin's College (Oamaru), Verdon College (Invercargill), Roncalli College (Timaru), St Peter's College (Invercargill) and Kavanagh College (Dunedin), brought 550 pupils, staff and coaches to Oamaru.
Teams were awarded four points for each win and two points for a draw after each game.
St Kevin's and Roncalli ended the two-day tournament tied on 26 points, with Kavanagh in third place on 23 points. St Peter's and Verdon finished on 19 points and 18 points, respectively.
The result was still in the balance when the last two games were played. St Kevin's principal Paul Olsen said he had been thrilled with the way the inaugural tournament had panned out.
''We have seen a tremendous display of intercollegial sportsmanship, all fiercely, but fairly contested, with the result going down to wire.''
