Dunedin's Youth Action Committee has asked the Dunedin City Council to set aside another $150,000 to support youth events and initiatives.

It also wants the council to employ a full-time youth adviser who would liaise with the youth committee and be a point of contact between youth and the council.

The youth committee was established last November and replaced the Youth Forum, which went into recess.

Young people made up about 30% of the city's population, committee spokeswoman Erin Young told the council's annual plan hearings committee this week.

‘‘[We] would like to ensure this diverse group is well represented and able to participate. And to create events and initiatives that affect them - by youth, for youth.''

Council community life general manager Graeme Hall said the council acknowledged its close working relationship with the youth committee. The council's young persons strategy implementation plan allowed $10,000 for committee administration and a $10,000 grant for youth events.

The committee's request for more funding and the appointment of an adviser would need to be considered against other spending priorities, he said, recommending no additional money be added to the 2008-09 budget.
