Staff from construction company Calder Stewart were in the dog house on Saturday but it was all for a good cause.

Volunteers from the Milton company worked on an $80,000 puppy shelter at the Otago SPCA animal refuge in Opoho.

SPCA chief inspector Virginia Pine said the company's generosity was "absolutely fantastic".

"We needed a better facility for our puppies, because the one we had was very old. In fact, it was so old, it wasn't even compliant with the Animal Welfare Act that we enforce, so it was a case of practise what you preach."

The new facility would be much easier to clean, which helped contain contagious diseases, she said.

Calder Stewart chief operating manger Tony Allison said seven staff had volunteered their labour on the project and the company donated the materials.

"We heard they needed a new shelter and thought "Well, we're in the trade'."
