The man was working in the ditch where fibre-optic cable was being installed, beside a rural property near the top of Ruru Ave, in the Dunedin suburb of St Leonards.
A ute and trailer appear to have rolled off their chocks and hit the man, trapping him.
Police, fire crews and St John were on scene about 12.30pm.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Tim Reynolds said the man had been freed by the time fire- fighters arrived.
St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said a 50-year-old man was taken to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries.
