Extensive earthworks continue on the Caversham highway development in Dunedin yesterday. New Zealand Transport Agency projects team manager Simon Underwood said May was the wettest month encountered by contractors since they started on the State Highway 1 upgrade two and-a-half years ago.
''That is, until June, which was wetter still.''
Overall, construction of the valley work was progressing well, although the area and type of work being undertaken had to be adjusted so construction could continue while the ground was wet, Mr Underwood said.
''The intense and prolonged rainfall also brought about the need to undertake works to ensure that the new embankment above Burnett St remained stable.
This additional rock stabilisation and drainage work is now complete,'' he said. New stormwater and sewerage pipes were now being laid from below Burnett St up Caversham Valley Rd, and electric cabling was being relocated.
