Geotech workmen use drilling equipment outside the former central Dunedin Warehouse site, which is set to become the new headquarters of the Otago Regional Council.

Safety barriers were erected at the corner where the old exit stairs once stood, across from the Harvey Norman shop while the drilling was carried out.

Port Otago, which is owned by the Otago Regional Council, bought the property in Maclaggan St in June 2021, for $10.2 million.

Port Otago chief executive Kevin Winders said his staff were in the process of confirming a design and expected it would be finished in the next month.

Port Otago had not experienced specific delays but the process of consulting all parties involved took time, he said.

Mr Winders indicated the price of the build may be affected by inflationary costs.

Once consent for the build was received, Port Otago expected the project to be completed within 18-24 months.
