Police are seeking witnesses after a man and a woman were attacked in a Dunedin street on Saturday morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis described the incident in Fawcett St, St Kilda, at 11.46am, as serious.

After two cars were in a collision in the street, the occupants of one car got out and allegedly started smashing the other car with a weapon, he said.

A male passenger was taken to Dunedin Hospital with "severe" head injuries and the female driver had minor injuries.

The man remained in Dunedin Hospital last night.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown earlier said police received several calls about the incident. It appeared those involved knew each other, he said.

Det Snr Sgt Croudis said two men, aged 46 and 24, had been arrested and charged with assault in relation to the incident.

Police believed others were involved and he asked anyone who saw the collision and subsequent attack on the car, to contact police.
