Power was cut to 640 customers on the Aurora Energy network on Mt Cargill and in Northeast Valley.
Delta marketing and communications manager Gary Johnson said power went out about 1.40pm. A total of 560 customers had power restored by 2.30pm, while the remaining 80 households had power by 4.50pm.
He could not confirm if the outage had been caused by the wind.
North Rd resident Ivan Mason said he was woken by a splitting sound about noon.
``I thought `that's odd'. It was very windy but I didn't expect to see a tree on the road.
``But there were no cars damaged or people hurt, so that is good.''
A Fire Service spokesman said an appliance from the Willowbank Station attended the scene.
The tree was resting on power lines, but no lines were pulled down.
Contractors from the Electricity Authority and Downer assisted with feeding the pin oak into a chipper and clearing the road, the spokesman said.
One lane of the road was blocked for about two hours while debris was removed.
MetService meteorologist Tom Adams said the gusts were ``classic spring weather''.
Swampy Summit recorded 118kmh winds at 8am yesterday, while Dunedin Airport reached 89kmh at 1pm and Nugget Point reached 105kmh at noon, he said.
A deep low across the whole of the country over the weekend, which caused strong northwesterlies to batter the South Island, would turn to southwesterlies today and tomorrow.
``The winds will be less strong, but exposed places on the Otago coast will be feeling windier because of the direction of the wind.''
Moderate winds would persist across most of the region until late Thursday, he said.
