During last weekend’s auction, the star attraction — a full-mount donkey taxidermy dubbed Dougal — sold for $5500.
Mr Proctor said a donkey was admittedly an unusual subject for a taxidermy, but sold above his estimate of between $1500 and $3000.
There had been a "little bit of a bidding war" online in the week before the auction, but the winning bid came by phone from a taxidermy collector in the North Island.
The auction house and Dougal’s previous owner were "very pleased" with the sale, Mr Proctor said.
Dougal will begin his trek north — in the back of a courier truck — next month. — APL
