A gigantic humpback whale carrying historic boat Elsie Evans on its back is "flying'' above visitors to Port Chalmers in the latest instalment of street art in the city.

Painted by Dunedin mural artists Daniel Mead and Tessa Petley on the wall of Port Otago's A shed near Back Beach, the 23m monochrome whale was designed by Port Chalmers author and illustrator David Elliot.

The idea for the "flying humpback'' mural came from the Port Chalmers Environment Liaison Committee.

The mural was sponsored by Port Otago, although chief executive Kevin Winders was reluctant to discuss the amount.

He said he was delighted with the look of the mural, which was already attracting attention.

Elliot was inspired by the number of historic ships' anchors around Port Chalmers to imagine an "alternative history'' for the township in which flying whales were the transport of choice.

"It's great that Port Otago have seen the merits of the idea and have been prepared to finance the fun,'' he said.

A grand opening event will be held on Thursday, December 7, from 4pm to 8pm at three Port Chalmers galleries: The Flying Whale, Moontide studio and Hyperbloom.
