Following complaints about burgeoning noxious weeds growing beside a popular harbour walking track, the Dunedin City Council has resumed a long-term eradication programme.
Council parks officer Neville Miller said a large quantity of gorse and broom had been sprayed beside the trail between Maia and the Otago University Rowing Club in Magnet St in recent weeks, and DCC Task Force Green staff were now removing the dead material.
Mr Miller said they had cleared away as much as they could from the track, and as much as they could access from the railway corridor.
It was difficult to maintain control of the weeds because not all of the land surrounding the track was owned by the council, he said.
Some of the land was owned by the New Zealand Transport Agency and KiwiRail, and negotiations with the organisations about control of the weeds were ongoing, he said.
Control work is carried out in spring each year when weeds grow fastest.
Mr Miller said the control work was part of a continuing eradication programme.
"Gorse and broom have tremendous seed banks below them and will take time to eradicate."
