Warnings for breaches as new meters activated

Dunedin's 150 new parking machines will be operational by Monday, but some motorists may escape with warnings for their first infringements, Dunedin City Council staff say.

Council development services manager Kevin Thompson said the first changes were introduced yesterday, when tariffs at the council's four parking buildings were updated to $2 an hour to 6pm, and $1 an hour from 6pm until closing.

However, the new parking machines on inner-city streets would become operational at 9am on Monday, by which time older parking signs and meters would have been removed, Mr Thompson said.

The council's four new tariffs for parking in the city would also become operational at that time, he said.

Staff would also be working through the weekend to update tariffs on each of the city's 270 older parking machines, which would be applied as each machine was updated, he said.

Staff would be starting at the northern end of the city and working their way south.

The tariff for the council's off-street Thomas Burns St carpark, beside the city's skate park, had already been updated from $4 to $5 a day, he said.

Parking officers enforcing the new rules would be handing out flyers and warning notices to motorists who broke the rules in areas with new parking machines which previously did not have them, Mr Thompson said.

The initiative would last for one week and aimed to help educate motorists, although repeat offenders - and those parking in areas where parking machines or meters have previously been in place - would still be ticketed, he said.

The implementation of the parking strategy would be reviewed in three months to see if changes were needed.
