New Zealand Remembrance Army Otago co-ordinator Bernie Flaherty said a working bee on Saturday had been an "awesome day".
About 35 graves were scrubbed and cleaned and the lichen removed, bringing the total number of war graves the group had restored at the cemetery to more than 200, Mr Flaherty said.
And there were still many to do.
The graves were starting to show their age.
They got a bit of upkeep from the council and were all generally in good shape, but needed some more care.
About 20 people attended the event, half of whom were students from the Student Volunteer Army.
Otago Student Volunteer Army treasurer Maia Dean said they were lucky with the weather and everyone had enjoyed the work.
Otago Military Historical Society chairman and military historian Peter Trevathan said the work at the graveyard had been under way for several years.
"We do it because it’s close to Anzac Day and it’s nice for the family to put a poppy on them," he said.
