A smoke alarm woke a Dunedin resident yesterday morning after a wall in the house caught alight.
A Fire Service spokesman said firefighters from Lookout Point and Roslyn were called to a house fire in Scotland Tce, Green Island, about 3am.
When firefighters arrived they found a fire was burning a hole in a wall and had spread inside the wall cavity.
The wall was near an open fire, which had burnt out.
It was unclear how the wall had caught fire.
A person sleeping inside the house was woken by a smoke alarm and called the firefighters.
"A smoke alarm saved us from having a a pretty nasty incident, which is a great result.''
