Walking tracks below the Ross Creek Reservoir Dam will close temporarily from Monday, as work on a $2.1 million upgrade of the 145-year-old dam begins, the Dunedin City Council says.
The temporary closures would allow heavy machinery to operate in the area to clear bush from a 0.5ha site below the dam.
The clearance was the first stage of work on the refurbishment of the dam over the next 18 months, which followed the discovery of large cracks in the embankment in 2010.
The tracks to be temporarily closed were those below the embankment, between the treatment plant buildings and the Burma Rd entrance, and south to the confluence of Ross and School creeks, a council spokeswoman said.
Tracks north of the embankment, including the crest track, would remain open during the work, which was expected to take two weeks.
