There were fears the haven would not be able to cope with the number of horses facing starvation after the summer drought in many parts of the South Island.
There were also doubts sufficient food could be obtained to help restore the horses to good health.
Those doubts have been dispelled. Donations have been coming in, including a large one from cereal magnate Dick Hubbard. More donations of hay and money are needed.
The condition of the horses at the haven is improving.
The haven is looking for a new property and is seeking to lease land within easy reach of Dunedin, spokeswoman Lauren Moses said.
The first two horses from the Highland Horse Haven to be rehomed are settling in well. One has gone to Wanaka and the other to Papakaio.
The new owners are very pleased with their horses, Ms Moses said.
