Waitangi weekend weather may start off miserable in parts of the South and ease up by the end of it.
Rain is forecast for Dunedin from Wednesday until Saturday, but the MetService predicts Sunday will have a few showers and Monday will be cloudy.
Queenstown could be all right the whole time, with some cloud and light winds.
MetService meteorologist Ashlee Parkes last week said it should remain mainly fine today and tomorrow.
"We have a low system that is forecast to move down from the tropics, south towards the country and approach the western South Island on Wednesday."
"So we’re expecting heavy rains for the West Coast and strong or gale northerly winds.
"The rain will develop over Thursday and Friday, particularly for the West Coast and lakes headwaters.
"There will be spillover rain into Otago and Southland, but because we’re so far out, the amount and exact location is difficult to pinpoint at the moment."
MetService’s long-term forecast showed the rain was likely to continue into Waitangi weekend. Most temperatures were forecast to be in the high teens or early 20s.
