Video shows violent attacks during Dunedin armed robbery

Police have released footage of a violent armed robbery in North Dunedin on Monday in the hope it will result in more information from the public.

The footage from the 12.30am robbery shows two masked men, one armed with a gun and the other armed with a large knife, approaching a member of the public, pushing him to the ground and kicking him twice in the head, before entering the Regent Night 'n Day store, where they attacked a staff member.

Detective Sergeant John Hedges, of Dunedin, said he hoped the dramatic video, which also shows the pair's getaway car, a Subaru, arriving at the Regent Rd store, would jog someone's memory and they would contact police or Crimestoppers.

He said police located the stolen Subaru in Elm Row, Canongate, yesterday, but were still keen to hear of any sightings of the vehicle, or information about any people associated with it.

Police now believed the two offenders shown in the footage were Maori or Polynesian and more people might have been in the Subaru during the robbery.

He said police would like to speak to a male Caucasian, with glasses, aged in his 20s, who was seen entering and leaving the store shortly after the robbery.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dunedin police on 471-4800 or anonymously via the Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.

Det Sgt Hedges said police did not believe the incident was linked to the armed robbery of an Invercargill dairy, as it was 90 minutes earlier and appeared to be much less organised.
