Two people were taken to hospital after a speeding car ploughed into a concrete power pole early yesterday.

Skid marks crossing the centre line of Victoria Rd marked the  path of the Nissan Lucino which smashed into the pole at the intersection  with Plunket St about 2.30am yesterday.

One person suffered serious facial injuries as a result of the crash.

The other occupant suffered moderate injuries.

Both were taken to Dunedin Hospital’s emergency department.

Senior Sergeant Steve Larking said it appeared speed was a factor in the crash.

He would not comment on whether police suspected alcohol to be involved.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The impact of the car smashed the concrete at the base of the pole and buckled its steel interior.

Delta marketing and communications manager Gary Johnson said staff attended the crash site soon after the incident to secure the damaged pole and it was replaced yesterday.

"There was no power outage to customers," he said.

Emergency services were not able to confirm the ages or genders of those involved in the crash yesterday.
