Truck clips bridge and crashes

An unfamiliar configuration of truck and trailer caught out a logging truck driver in Dunedin yesterday, when the empty trailer clipped an overbridge.

The trailer was loaded on the back of the southbound truck as it returned from unloading logs at Port Chalmers about 2.30pm, police said.

At the Sawyers Bay overbridge, one of the trailer's bolsters clipped the bridge and the driver lost control of the truck, which careened into a ditch before rolling on to its side on the road, about 50m south of the bridge.

Senior Constable Lindsay Turner, of Port Chalmers, said the driver received minor bumps and bruises and was treated at the scene.

It was the first time the driver had used that particular configuration of truck and trailer and he had not adjusted the load for the bridge height of 4.6m, Snr Const Turner said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Traffic was diverted around the scene for about four hours.

The police commercial vehicle investigation unit is investigating the crash.
