A Port Chalmers landmark is looking its best ahead of the town’s open day on Saturday.

Scaffolding around the town hall and library complex was put up towards the end of last year and came down recently, revealing the $98,949 spruce-up.

The project was one of 11 community hall upgrades made possible after the Dunedin City Council was awarded $420,000 from the Government’s Provincial Growth Fund last year.

A common colour scheme had been used across the upgraded halls, because some paint colours were more durable, a council spokeswoman said.

Port Chalmers Day on Saturday will feature artisan markets, buskers, shopping, face-painting and food trucks from 11am.

Return train trips will be run from the Dunedin Railway Station for the occasion.

The town hall building was constructed in 1889 and services it hosted ranged from the court house to customs and fire brigade offices. The public library service dates back to 1952.

Other PGF projects included re-roofing the Mosgiel Coronation Hall and exterior painting at halls in Harwood, Middlemarch, Warrington, Macandrew Bay and Maori Hill.

Portobello Coronation Hall, Karitane Hall, the West Taieri District War Memorial Hall in Outram and the Green Island Civic Hall have had minor upgrades.
