Tradies around Dunedin knocked off a little early yesterday to drink beer and have a feed on the last day of business before the Christmas break.

Known as Tradies Day, the event is traditionally celebrated with a few drinks and a barbecue.

The weather was accommodating and workers around the industrial wharf area could be seen relaxing in the yards of their businesses with music and food.

Naylor Love Dunedin carpenter Steffan Groves said it had been a hard year for a lot of tradies.

Covid-19 lockdowns had complicated business and taken a toll on families, but the situation had been handled well, and he was happy to send the year out on a high note.

The business worked with a variety of different teams and it was great to have a chance to catch up with co-workers he had not seen for a while.

Management gave away prizes to the staff and recognised long-serving and retired employees.

Over the break, he would be taking his 16-year-old son camping near Herbert, as well as doing a few day trips around the region.

Precision Profile Ltd director Don Armstrong said his small team was quite close and knew ‘‘how to enjoy a beer together’’.

It was important for colleagues to get to know each other outside the work environment, and Tradies Day was a great way to see each other off before closing shop for two and a-half weeks.

They celebrated with a barbecue loaded with sausages, bacon and lamb before having a drink at the Wharf Hotel.
