Shania Hutton knows how hard it is to be stuck in hospital with not much to do.

She sustained horrific injuries when she was struck by a car.

She spent six months in Dunedin Hospital and the Wilson Centre in Auckland after the accident in Dunedin in December 2011.

This week, she visited the children's ward at Dunedin Hospital to present it with a collection of books for patients.

Shania's school library had been disposing of some of them, and some had been purchased.

Teacher aide Kerry Bristow said she had been impressed by Shania's generosity.

''She's done all the work, with the librarian at school as well. They've worked really hard together.

''She chose all the books, and even got some new ones bought especially for the children's ward.''

Mrs Bristow said she had noticed a lack of books while visiting hospital or a GP with children.

Money for the new books had come from student council fundraising.

Children's ward play specialist Jackie Christos said she was grateful for the books, as the ward always needed them.

The ward gave books to parents to take home once they got ''tatty'', as at that stage they could no longer be sterilised.
