Motorcycle dealer McIver and Veitch has taken delivery of a $50,000 Tri Glide Ultra Classic trike, which is one of only two Harley-Davidson has exported from the United States so far.
The other three-wheeler went to a dealer in the North Island.
Dealership principal Jason Veitch said New Zealand was the test export market for the new trike.
Two thousand were being manufactured, but only 30 would be coming to New Zealand, in February, and most of them were already spoken for.
The demonstration model shown to the Otago Daily Times is not for sale.
However, at least one has been sold in Otago.
Mr Veitch said it was likely the trike would appeal to women who might be reluctant to buy a two-wheeled Harley-Davidson because of its weight.
As well as three wheels, the 513kg trike has a 1690cc, 45-degree, twin-cylinder engine, cruise control, six-speed manual transmission with reverse gear, adjustable shock absorbers, a lockable trunk, a four-speaker stereo system, mp3 player socket, intercom for pillion passengers, leather seat and glove box.
Mr Veitch said the trike was different to ride than a motorcycle, but was very smooth.
For several decades from the 1930s, Harley-Davidson made three-wheelers called "servi-cars", which were popular with police and small businesses in the United States.
