Three people were lucky to escape serious injuries in two car crashes in the Dunedin area yesterday.

A male in his 30s escaped with a cut to his hand after his car hit a bank in Portobello Rd, near Glenfalloch, and rolled on to its roof about 5pm yesterday.

A St John spokeswoman said the man was treated at the scene.

Earlier in the day, a 21-year-old Dunedin student was flown to Dunedin Hospital from Loan Metal Rd at Momona, near Dunedin airport, after the car he was driving struck a concrete power pole.

A pair of Dunedin students were lucky to escape with their lives after crashing into this concrete power pole at Momona yesterday, police say.
An attending paramedic decided the nature of the man's leg injury meant he needed to get to hospital as fast as possible, a St John spokeswoman said.

Constable Jo Tiszavari, of Mosgiel, said the car was badly damaged in the 8.30am crash, but it was unclear whether speed was a factor.

Police inquiries were continuing.

The other occupant of the vehicle was uninjured in the crash.

Const Tiszavari said she understood the driver was released from hospital last night.

Both occupants were "extremely" lucky not to have sustained more serious injuries, she said.
