Three arrests after two fights

There arrests at the weekend following fights outside McDonald's restaurant in George St are probably indicative of what is going on in the city centre, Dunedin police say.

Police responded to fighting and general disorder near the restaurant most weekend nights, Sergeant Ed Baker said, but it seemed likely most incidents in George St went unreported.

On Saturday, a 16-year-old was arrested and charged with assault after allegedly punching someone outside McDonald's about 2.30am.

Twenty minutes later, police were called back there when another fight broke out.

Two 18-year-old youths were arrested and charged with fighting in a public place.

"That's just what happens when you combine drunk people with takeaway food."

"That's where people can help us.

"Anyone who sees anything happening there, or anywhere around George St and the Octagon, should always call us."
