Threat to shut gate on popular walking track

A popular Dunedin track may soon be shut off to the public due to "ignorant" walkers failing to close gates and letting livestock out.

Cutting through the fields of former Dunedin City councillor Doug Hall’s 202 hectares is the Cleghorn St track, a private path open to the public.

There he raises sheep and cattle, both of which keep escaping because of walkers pushing the gates shut, but not latching them properly.

Mr Hall said it had happened seven times in the last two months.

He created the track back in 1985 because he wanted people to be able to appreciate his land like he did.

"It was a beautiful track through here.

"It’s still beautiful."

But now people were abusing the privilege and the only solution was to cut off public access.

The track was publicly listed and very popular among students, he said.

On a warm day he could have up to 40 people come through.

He would be speaking to the DCC about it next week and was already considering installing no trespassing signs and security cameras.

"I can’t imagine any other alternative.

"I shouldn’t have to go around and double-check all of my stock every day.

"I’ve got too much other work to do."

The spring-loaded latches were easy to use and took just a second to lock.

Those who left them open were "ignorant" and did not think about how important it was.

"You give them something and they just abuse it.

"Why should I suffer?"

The animals could easily push the gate open and spend a day eating a field of hay before they were noticed.

It had been a consistent problem, but it had happened this frequently since 2005, during which all of his cattle were let out on to a public road.

Mr Hall closed the track temporarily in 2017 because runners were scaring livestock.
