A firewood thief has chopped down fundraising efforts for a Port Chalmers community group.
"I would like to call him all sorts of names, but I can't," Port Chalmers and District Lions Club president Ella Butson said yesterday.
Earlier this week it was discovered 15 rounds of macrocarpa had been removed from a section on State Highway 88. A chain was cut to gain access to the property.
Club members worked hard to cut and then sell donated wood, to raise funds for the West Harbour community, she said.
"People are going to miss out now. If they are that desperate, they could have rung us and we could have perhaps come to some arrangement and donate some to them ... It just makes my blood boil, really."
The wood was provided by the Dunedin City Council, and the remaining wood pile would be shifted to a new storage site.
