Classical music is thought to be therapeutic and it is hoped to be of benefit to the Otago Community Hospice this month.
On November 30, John Van Buskirk will perform works by Liszt, Messaien and Gottschalk at a piano recital at Marama Hall.
He was inspired to hold a benefit concert for the hospice after reading about the organisation's economic situation and seeing the Otago Daily Times' "Help the Hospice" campaign.
"Music helps us rejoice but it also helps us deal with pain," he said.
"Nobody wants to need the hospice but everyone does need some help at some point."
Van Buskirk is an accomplished pianist and has played in cities ranging from Budapest to Wellington.
He holds a masters degree from the Juilliard School and has recorded more than 20 albums with various chamber orchestras.
The recital begins at 2pm.
Tickets, available at the door, are $20 for adults and $5 for children.
