The Hospice remembrance tree has had a record year, with an $11,000 haul, despite gloomy financial conditions.
Organisers said yesterday recent publicity about the hospice's funding shortfall, and the Otago Daily Times' "Help the Hospice" campaign to right the problem, were behind the tree's success.
"It's the best effort we've ever had," Rotary Club of Dunedin South volunteer co-ordinator Gordon Allen said.
The tree was housed in the Golden Centre, and people paid gold coins to dedicate Christmas baubles, which were placed on the tree.
Mr Allen, who has been organising the appeal for the 15 years it has been running, said this year's returns compared with $8700 last year, making a $130,900 total over the 15 years.
He laughed when asked if he planned to be back next year: "That's for sure."
