Teens with a hankering for sandwiches and chocolate were apprehended by police ''munching'' on food stolen when they allegedly broke into a South Dunedin cafe early yesterday.
Three teens, aged 13, 14 and 17, were tracked by a police dog after breaking into Coffee on Prince Albert about 3am.
Police say the trio had smashed a window in the door to get in and stole $100 from the cash register, sandwiches, chocolate, soft drinks and $40 from the tips jar.
Cafe owner Tracee Porter said she was angry.
''They took all the sandwiches ... all but one because it was brown bread. They obviously don't like brown bread.
''I am angry and really deflated.
''My customers this morning were really angry too,'' she said.
Ms Porter said she regularly donated the money from the tips jar to the Child Cancer Foundation.
Senior Sergeant Liz Waru said the teens were found by police in Young St, St Kilda, ''having a feed''.
''They left the dark chocolate behind and ate the milk chocolate.''
That is how police knew it was likely to be children, she said.
''Kids don't like dark chocolate.''
A 13-year-old was referred to Youth Aid and a 14-year-old and 17-year-old would appear in the youth court later this month.
