A Dunedin teenager has managed to wrangle the keys to his grandfather’s sports car and has permission to take it on a weekend cruise — despite being on his learner licence.

Classic Jaguar Limousines owner Steve McNulty does not have a shortage of sports cars and will have two of his six Jaguars on display at the Dunedin Brit and Euro Car Show on Sunday at the Brighton Domain.

One of those cars will be driven down by his 17-year-old grandson Callum Fotheringham.

"My son-in-law is driving one of my classics and my grandson is driving the Jaguar, while I will be driving one of the fire appliances from the Dunedin Fire Brigade Restoration Society which I’m a part of."

Mr McNulty said he was a "great believer in getting kids interested in the classic car movement, because a lot of the classic car clubs are losing members as they get older".

"He loves driving the car and he’s driven it quite a lot with me."

Callum will have a parent in the car while he makes the trip, but was excited to get behind the wheel.

Entry to the event costs a donation, and proceeds will go to K9 Medical Detection New Zealand, which will be doing a live demonstration with its dogs on the day.

People who bring their cars for display will be charged $20.

Mr McNulty said there would be a wide range of cars, from Fiat Bambinas to Ferraris.
