Police last night named the dead youth as Liam Christopher Stevenson (16), of Dunedin.
He was studying at Otago Polytechnic.
Logan Park High School principal Jane Johnson yesterday said Liam, a former pupil, passed his NCEA level one last year with ease and had "a lot of ability".
He was "a bright young man", she said.
His younger brother attends the school and, like the family, was devastated by the death, Ms Johnson said.
"He is pretty cut up ... The whole family is."
The school was supporting its pupils and had activated a crisis plan to help those affected, she said.
"We know the group affected and we know his friends, but at this stage we always emphasise the positive in this situation."
