Dunedin Railways fears trips on the Taieri Gorge Railway could be cancelled for up to a month by "massive slips and washouts'' on the line.

Dunedin Railways operations manager Grant Craig said trips from Dunedin to Pukerangi and Middlemarch had been cancelled for between a fortnight and a month.

The storm on Friday and Saturday caused "massive slips and washouts on the line''.

The extent of the damage was unknown, as slips in the middle of the line stopped staff from discovering the level of destruction elsewhere on it.

Removing the slips and repairing the tracks would take time, he said.

The "slushy'' slips needed to dry so they could be removed from the line.

Mr Grant remained philosophical last night.

"Everyone has been hit hard by the weather bomb, so you've just got to get on and fix it.''

Dunedin Railways was also waiting for KiwiRail to reopen the main trunk line between Dunedin and Oamaru.

Mr Grant hoped Kiwirail would give clearance by Friday so a service could run to Palmerston.
