The new supermarket in Green Island is set to open months earlier than expected.

Owner and operator John Moyle said the opening date for Fresh Choice Green Island was not set in stone but Cook Brothers Construction was ahead of schedule and the supermarket should open on December 1.

The winter weather had been conducive to building and the structure was enclosed sooner than expected, so work could continue despite the recent rainfall.

The winter had been cold rather than wet, he said.

''We didn't have any of those long, miserable drizzly days.''

If there had been more rain, the building would have opened next year, he said.

Last week, the car park for 89 vehicles was being smoothed out and cabling and flooring was being laid inside.

The store was about 1600sq m with a 1150sq m retail area.

Despite the build running smoothly, there had been some small running changes including a window placement, changing the way a door opened and deciding to build a covered canopy out the back.

Even though it was going well there was still nerves, he said.

''It's a big investment and it's going to be busy - we need it to be busy.''

The new supermarket would have 30 full-time equivalent jobs.

Some of the roles would be part-time so up to 60 staff could be employed.

Progressive Enterprises' property general manager Adrian Walker said the $7million project was a significant investment in Dunedin.
