Substation upgrade to start

Almost 3000 Aurora Energy customers in the Central Dunedin and Roslyn areas are expected to benefit from upgrades to the Smith St substation which will begin this month.

Aurora service delivery general manager Richard Starkey said the project involved future proofing the network, strengthening the electricity supply by replacing equipment which had reached "end-of-life", and building a new switchroom.

He said the work would take place in stages and was expected to be completed in mid-2025.

"Some traffic management will be required in the area at times, and affected customers will be informed of any significant disruptions to traffic by a letter from the traffic management provider.

"Customers supplied by the Smith St substation will be supplied by neighbouring-zone substations for the duration of the project."

The work followed a recently completed, year-long project in which Aurora Energy installed 2.5km of ducting.

"This was to prepare for the hauling of a new 33kV (kilovolt) underground electricity cable across central Dunedin, which is due to take place in early 2025.

"The cable will run from the Smith St zone substation towards North Dunedin, to the Willowbank zone substation on Great King St.

"This will form part of a ring network that will improve the security of electricity supply by providing back up options for 5900 customers supplied by the two substations."

Mr Starkey said Aurora Energy had been in touch with the adjacent landowners ahead of the work at the Smith St zone substation, and would continue to keep customers updated as the work progressed.
