Studies, fun mixed in school festivities

Sugar, fun and 10 days to enjoy school to the fullest. That is what the pupils of Bathgate Park School have been given to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the school.

The Dunedin school was formed from the 2011 merger of Macandrew Intermediate School and Forbury School.

Principal Katrina Robertson said the school had so far celebrated the last 10 days of the school year with cake, ice cream and a wide array of activities.

The fun began last Friday.

Pupils had put forward their suggestions for fun ideas for the last 10 days of the school year and the most popular ones had been selected.

The most requested idea was a beach day, which sadly was not possible due to the weather, she said.

The activities were woven into the school day while finishing up studies for the year.

Next week, pupils would enjoy a movie day with popcorn and free time.

"Most of the things pupils wanted to do were just around the school here."

More than anything, they wanted the chance to relax and spend time with their friends, Ms Robertson said.

Covid-19 also put some restrictions on what could be done, especially concerning parents.

There were plans to show off the work of the school’s performers, but a compromise had to be made.

Yesterday, the sixth day of activities, performances were recorded and sent out to parents.

After the performances, pupils enjoyed an afternoon of water play with a slippery slide and bubbles for the juniors.

Kapa Haka performer Timaima Tudrea (11) said it was great to have a chance to show off what they had learnt throughout the year.

She was proud of their performance and it was good to have a chance to share it.

She had loved the activities throughout the work and laser tag had been her favourite part so far.
