A group of Otago Polytechnic students are rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck in to help raise funds and awareness for the Dunedin Night Shelter Trust.

Lee-ann Smith, Kim Kuskis, Kylie Barker, and Tracey McCabe have taken on the project as part of their studies towards a Certificate in Human Services in the polytechnic's School of Social Services.

Lecturer and placement co-ordinator Lisa Muir said students would graduate from the course with support work qualifications in social services, mental health and addiction or disability support. There are 63 students on the course.

''Their studies and interests are very much aligned with the work of the Night Shelter, so this is an ideal project,'' Mrs Muir said.

Visiting the Night Shelter and speaking to trustees had inspired Miss Smith to get involved.

''We learnt about who goes there and how much the Night Shelter does to help them,'' she said.

Mr Kuskis said anyone could end up needing the Night Shelter service ''and it is humbling to think about that.''

The four students plan to make contacts in the community and raise awareness of the Night Shelter Trust.

They have some fundraising ideas, which include mufti days at schools, collection boxes in stores and supermarkets, hopefully collecting at the Otago Farmers Market, and assisting with grant applications.
