University of Otago students lined up for free flu vaccinations at a temporary clinic on campus yesterday.

A total of 150 students participated in the first Otago University Students Association and Student Health flu vaccine clinic.

Student Health operations manager Margaret Perley said staff and time limits meant 150 vaccinations was an "obtainable goal'' for the initiative.

Vaccinations were beneficial, she said.

"Every student vaccinated will help to minimise the incidence and spread of flu within the university community.''

The university was considering other initiatives to combat flu in 2017, but it was too early to say what they would be, she said.

University of Otago student Kirsty Dibley (21) said she probably would not have been vaccinated against the flu had it not been for the free clinic.

"I think it's definitely a good idea for the university to do this, because once one person in a flat has it, then we all get it.''

OUSA president Laura Harris said the clinic was a success.

"It is a really good time to be doing it, too, because with exams coming up the cost of people getting sick is so high.''
